This week's Met Gala, one of the most exclusive carpets in New York City, is the main event of events. But what happens after? Are people dancing at these parties or just standing around? Who is DJing and are they good? Is there drama? I’m here to give an exclusive peek into a Met Gala afterparty, offering you a behind-the-scenes experience of fashion’s biggest night.
Prior to hitting Meatpacking’s cobblestone streets, we sat at the penthouse of The Mark, drinking subpar cocktails and chatting with a few gaylebrities, Violet Chachki and Ludovic De Saint Sernin. While dressed in a full Thom Browne get-up wearing a skirt, as Samantha Jones would say is for “easy access,” I sauntered around the roof taking in the view as the carpet continued. Violet and I kiki’d about our long days and evening plans.
I asked, “Where are we heading this evening?” Violet remarked, “I’m just going where the wind takes me,” as she presented as somewhat overstimulated from Met Gala content. The performer appeared gorgeous but visibly exhausted from her intense preparation for her residency at Crazy Horse in Paris this June, yet still posing for photos when prompted.
After I had a few strong cocktails, we left to replenish our cigarette supply and head out for the night. My friend Eden grabbed a hotdog from the lobby as we stood to wait for a friend and ran into Tyla in her sprinter van.
As we got in our car to head to the Boom Boom Room, lots of yawns were flooding the vehicle from all three of us - the girls were tired, but I was hopeful to see Jonathan Bailey as my delusion still believes we’d be perfect for each other after his stellar performance in ‘Fellow Travelers.’
As I entered the almost pitch-black club with flashing lights, I bumped into Rickey Thompson with some of his friends. I greeted him while asking, “Where is Denzel?” as it was odd not seeing the seemingly inseparable west-coast duo together. Looks were shared, comments were made, while his friend chimed in, saying, “We don’t know her.”
Harrison Smith aka The Dare, appeared out of nowhere after just playing his psychotically sceney Freakquencies party on Thursday with Charli XCX, which was filled with club classics, nostalgic indie rock bops, and underground emerging talent such as Bassvictim’s latest album.
The DJ at the venue played some of Beyonce's Renaissance and predominantly commercial tunes, which was underwhelming at an FKA Twigs afterparty as she's known for her experimental music. Then, all the sudden, a man hopped on the mic and the vogueing commenced, while attendees such as NYSocialBee and Army Chandler danced in an open circle with the star of the night herself.
FKA Twigs hoisted herself up onto the bar to perform her new unreleased song that was bassy, electronic, and inherently horny. FKA wore a high slit flesh-toned custom Dion Lee dress with the word “Eusexua,” which was the song she performed at the Valentino show in September. Twigs rocked a half-shaved head and pigtails, topping off the look with kiki boots on her feet after her stellar campaign with Marc Jacobs by Juergen Teller dropped in late January.
While dancing with the ethereal pop star herself, I got to speak to her for a brief moment. I asked, “How are you doing my love?” Twigs responded with a cheeky smile, “I’m great. I love your skirt!” I gawked with her over her recent British Vogue cover by the new Editor-in-Chief, Chioma Nnnadi. She replied, “We put a ton of work into it and I’m really happy with the results. It was an honor to be sporting a few of my favorite designers from the UK.” She was adorned in small designers such asers such as Supriya Lele, Jawara Alleyne, and even Fidan Novruzova’s signature crinkled boots.
Upon looking over my shoulder to the VIP section, I see Mr. Amazon himself, Jeff Bezos, accompanied by his fiancé, Lauren Sanchez, who was seen just last week wearing archive Thierry Mugler. I’ve been living for her recently, but I’m curious… Does Jeff Bezos listen to FKA Twigs? I definitely need his Obama-like 2024 Songs of the Year list as soon as possible.
On the way to the bathroom, I spotted Camila Cabello and immediately bolted across the room to speak with her about her unexpected shift in music and aesthetics. I inquired, “Who is this era for?” She answered while dancing, “This era is for the barefoot girls in Miami.” I uncontrollably laughed with a huge smile on my face. As the gay scene in New York is brutal, I wondered if the New York gays were treating her well after the backlash on her latest single, ‘I Luv It’. Camila stated, “I think so because someone just asked me if I’ll do a show on Fire Island.”
After a long day in the world of fashion, I ventured out of the club, suddenly struck by the thought – where was Anne Hathaway tonight? Going into the evening, I was determined to capture her dancing to some iconic 2000s tracks. Awaiting the elevator, Sam Smith and Christian Cowan, whom no one knew were dating, were also making their grand exit as Sam Smith creepily laughed like a villain in a Disney movie the whole ride down.
